Traffic Signal Installation is a specialised task which is undertaken by a number of companies throughout the Country. Equipment is first procured from the supplier then installed on street. This includes all poles, heads, push button facilities, detection and cabling. The duct network for the cables is usually installed by a Civil Engineering contractor prior to the signal company starting on site.
Installation usually requires a form of temporary traffic management and is often restricted to off peak working to minimise the impact on the existing highway network, although this does vary depending on the location of the installation. A number of health and safety procedures must be adhered to during the installation of traffic signals as there are a number of significant hazards such as working alongside live traffic, working at height and working with live electricity.
When the traffic signals have been installed on site but before they are switched on they should be ‘bagged off’ to minimise confusion to drivers who otherwise may think that the traffic signals are in operation.
